Summer: A Season of Joy, Growth, & Outward Expansion
Happy Summer from Well.Being Acupuncture & Holistic Healing!
Summer in Georgia usually means sunshine...and if you've lived here long enough, you know it often comes with an afternoon thunderstorm too! While many of us associate summer with vacations, longer days, and time with family and friends, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views this season as one of growth, movement, and outward expansion.
In TCM, summer is connected to the Fire element, which governs the Heart and is associated with the emotion of joy. Joy is an essential part of good health, but like everything in Chinese medicine, balance is key. Too little joy can leave us feeling disconnected or low, while too much stimulation can leave us feeling restless, anxious, or overwhelmed.
One of the best ways to nourish the Heart during the summer is by spending time with people you love, laughing often, enjoying nature, and making space for activities that genuinely bring you happiness. At the same time, remember to slow down and allow yourself moments of rest and quiet so your body and mind can recharge.
Here are a few simple ways to support your health this summer:
-
Choose cooling foods. Watermelon, cucumbers, tomatoes, leafy greens, berries, and fresh herbs help the body stay cool and hydrated.
-
Stay well hydrated. Water is always the best choice, but coconut water can help replenish electrolytes after time outdoors. Chrysanthemum tea is another refreshing option traditionally used in Chinese medicine to help cool the body.
-
Move your body wisely. Early morning or evening walks, yoga, Qi Gong, swimming, or gentle exercise during the cooler parts of the day help keep your energy flowing without overheating.
-
Go easy on foods that create excess heat. Very greasy, fried, spicy, or heavily processed foods may leave you feeling sluggish or overheated during the hottest months.
Summer is meant to be enjoyed. It's a season for connecting with others, embracing new experiences, and taking advantage of the longer days—but it's also important to listen to your body and honor its need for rest and balance.
If you're feeling stressed, run down, overheated, or simply want to support your health through the season, we're here to help. Acupuncture is a wonderful way to restore balance, calm the nervous system, and keep your body functioning at its best.
Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful, healthy, and abundant summer!
In good health,
